覚え方
compile（集めてまとめる）+ -ation（行為や結果を表す名詞）。ラテン語 compīlātiō（略奪・文書の集成）＝ compīlō（略奪する）+ -tiō にさかのぼる。
元が「かき集めて奪う」なので、今も「あちこちから寄せ集めて一つにしたもの」という含みが残る。a compilation album（編集アルバム）、a compilation of data（データの集成）。
プログラミングの「コンパイル」（ソースをまとめ上げて実行できる形にする）も同じ語。「集めて一つに仕上げる」が共通イメージ。
