competentの語源と覚え方

ラテン語 competō（一致する・適合する）の現在分詞 competēns から。con-（共に、*kom-）＋ petō（求める）で、「複数のものが同じ方を求め合ってぴたりと合う」が原義。
「求められる水準に合っている」→「有能な・適格な」。able が「できる力がある」なのに対し、competent は「その仕事に必要な条件を満たしている」という資格寄りのニュアンス。
petō（*peth₂-）は compete（競う）・petition（請願）・appetite（食欲）の pet と同じ。同語源の compete と competent が「争う」と「適任」に分かれたのは、「同じものを一緒に求める」という原義が二方向に伸びたため。
