覚え方
ラテン語 apprehendō（物理的または精神的に捕らえる）は、ad-（〜へ）+ prehendō（つかむ・捕らえる）。その不定形 apprehendēre も同じ構造を示し、対象へ手を伸ばしてしっかりつかむことが原義だった。
実際に人を「捕らえる」ことから、頭の中で意味や状況を「つかむ」→「理解する・把握する」へ発展した。手でつかむことと、頭でつかむことを同じ比喩で読むのがコツ。comprehend（完全につかむ→理解する）や prehensile（つかむのに適した）も、つかむイメージでまとめられる。
