seize は古フランス語を経て、ラテン語系の sacio（占有する・取り立てる）に結びつく語。sacio は *seh₂g-（たどる・追う）と関係し、目標を追って到達したものを自分の手中に収めるイメージから、「つかむ・奪取する」になった。
