seize は古フランス語 seisir（占有する）を経て、ラテン語 saciō（権利を主張する・自分のものにする）に結びつく語。saciō はフランク語の「訴える」にあたる語からの借用で、訴えて権利を主張し、自分のものにするという法律の場面の言葉が、今の「つかむ・奪う・押収する」につながっている。
seek も同じ語根（たどる・追う）にさかのぼるが、seek が「追って探す」のに対し、seize は「権利を主張して手中に収める」と考えると対比しやすい。seize を見たら、機会や物を逃さず手中に収めると覚えよう。
