gather は、古い形 gaderian（収集する・一つの集団に集める）から来た語で、根底には *結合して一つにする gʰedʰ- というイメージがある。ばらばらの物を一か所へ寄せて「集める・収集する」となり、作物を集める「収穫する」にも広がった。
