英語 together は、古英語 tōgædere（一緒に）に由来する語で、tō-（〜へ）+ 現代英語 gather（集める）にあたる gædere が組み合わさってできた。
「あちこちのものを一つの場所へ集める」という原義が、現代英語 together の「一緒に」、さらに「心を一つにして＝一致団結して」の意味にもつながった。
gædere（gather）の語源は印欧祖語 *gʰedʰ-（結び合わせる・適う）にさかのぼるとされる。gather/gether を見たら「集める・結びつく」と覚えれば、together も「〜へ集めて結びつく」イメージで思い出しやすい。
