ラテン語 circō（巡り歩く）にさかのぼり、circus（円・輪）につながる語。あちこちを回って探す姿を覚える手掛かりにすると、search の「捜す・調べる」が具体的になる。部屋でもウェブでも、目的のものを見つけるために範囲を調べる動作が中心。
search the room は「部屋を捜す」で、部屋が調べる場所。search for a key は「鍵を捜す」で、for の後ろが見つけたいものになる。search + 調べる場所、search for + 探し物と組にしよう。名詞の a search for the missing key は、その鍵を捜す行為をひとまとまりに述べている。
