古英語 byndele（束）から。bind（縛る）と同じ系統で、「縛ってひとまとめにしたもの」が原義。ばらばらのものを寄せて括った状態が中身である。
名詞は a bundle of letters（手紙の束）、動詞は「束ねる」だけでなく「押し込む・急いで詰め込む」（bundle him into a car＝彼を車に押し込む）、bundle up（厚着する＝体を包み込む）。ソフトウェアを機器に付けて売る「バンドル」も、一括りにするという同じ発想。
補足: a bundle of nerves（神経の束＝ひどく緊張している人）、cost a bundle（大金がかかる）という慣用句もよく使う。
