英語 bent は、bend（曲げる・向きを変える）の過去形・過去分詞にあたる語で、その語源は古英語 bendan（縛る・弓に弦を張る）、印欧祖語 *bʰendʰ-（縛る・結ぶ）にさかのぼる。「弦を張るように引き絞る」が原義。
