古英語 græs（草） がそのまま現代の grass。さかのぼると「生い育つ・芽吹く」を表す *gʰreh₁- にたどり着く。伸びていくものの代表が草だった、という素直な命名。
同じ *gʰreh₁- から grow（育つ）・green（草の色＝緑）・growth（成長）が出ている。gr- で始まる「伸びる・育つ」の一群とまとめると、grass・grow・green・grazing（草を食む）が一続きに見える。
「芝生」の意味では the grass、「草原」は grassland。grasshopper（草を跳ぶ者＝バッタ）も同じ grass。
