英語 bunch は中英語 bunche（こぶ）を受け継いだ語で、原義は体にできる丸い「こぶ・膨らみ」を指していたとされる。
「丸く盛り上がった塊」という原義から、ぶどうの房のように複数のものが一か所に集まって丸くまとまった「束・かたまり」を指す意味に発展したとされる。
a bunch of grapes（一房のぶどう）のように、房状に集まったものを bunch と呼ぶ。「丸いこぶ状のかたまり」という絵をイメージすると覚えやすい。
