覚え方
ラテン語 īnfōrmō（形作る・教養を施す）に、動作や結果を表す名詞を作る -ātiō が付くと、īnfōrmātiō（知識を与えること・概念形成）になる。ここには *en-（中へ）のイメージがあり、知識や形を人の中へ入れて整えることを表した。
「形作る」から「心や理解を形作る」、さらに「伝えられた知識・情報」へと意味が発展した。中英語の enformacioun（教育・知識の伝達）を経て、information は特定の主題に関する知識を意味するようになった。
form を見たら「形作る」、-ation を見たら「その行為や結果」と読むのがコツである。information は、単なるデータではなく、理解を形作る材料と考えると覚えやすい。
