ドイツ語 Entropie（系の無秩序さの尺度）から入った語。背景にあるのは *trep-（向きを変える） で、「どちらへ転じていくかの度合い」という発想が名前の中心にある。
熱力学では、エネルギーが使える形から使えない形へ一方向に移っていくことを測る量で、そこから情報理論では「不確かさの量」、日常語では「秩序が崩れていく傾向」を指すようになった。放っておけば散らかる方向にしか進まないというイメージで押さえると、分野をまたいでも意味がつながる。
補足: この概念に entropy の名を与えたのは1865年、熱力学を体系化した物理学者クラウジウス。同じ「転じる」の系統には trope（転義・比喩）・tropical（太陽が折り返す回帰線の）が並ぶ。
