secret はラテン語 sēcrētus（別々の要素を分けた・違いを見分けた）に由来する。*sēcrētus は「ふるい分ける」を表す krey- と結びつき、他のものから分けて取り出されたもの、つまり人目から隔てられたものを表した。
「分けておく」ことから、情報を他人に知らせず隠しておく「秘密」へ意味が発展した。secrecy（秘密であること）や secrete（隠す・分泌する）も secret と同じ連想を持ち、secret を見たら「他からふるい分けて隠す」と覚えるとよい。
