ラテン語 mystērium（神聖な秘密・隠された儀式）に、性質や関連を表す接尾辞 -ous が付いた語。mystērium は、苔で覆われて見えなくなるイメージの印欧祖語 *mews-（苔を生やす・覆う）と結びつき、隠されていて簡単には見通せないものを表した。
そこから mysterious は「隠れた性質を持つ」→「説明しにくい・理解しにくい・神秘的な」と発展した。フランス語 mystérieux も「完全に説明または理解するのが難しい」という同じ方向の意味を持つ。mystery を覆いの下に隠れたものと考えると覚えやすい。
