覚え方
per は「すっかり・徹底的に」、plex はラテン語 plectō（編む）。すっかり編み込まれてほどけない perplexus が「もつれた・混乱した」で、その状態が perplexitās＝「当惑」である。
頭の中が絡まって解けない絵が芯。in perplexity（当惑して）のように状態を指すほか、複数 perplexities で「込み入った難題」を指すこともある。
plex は「編む」で、complex（編み合わさった→複雑な）と同じ部品。言語モデルの評価指標 perplexity（次の語をどれだけ迷うか）も、この「当惑の度合い」そのものである。
