updateの語源と覚え方
覚え方
update は up-（上方向・増加）+ date（日付を記す・特定の日時）。date は *deh₃-（与える・授ける）と結びつき、情報に日時を与えて記録することを表す。そこに up- が加わり、「情報を上の段階へ引き上げる」イメージになった。
そのため update は、古い情報に新しい内容を加えて「更新する」、または更新された情報そのものを指す。update a file（ファイルを更新する）、a software update（ソフトウェアの更新）のように、up- は「新しい状態へ上げる」と覚えるとよい。
