覚え方
フランス語 complexe（複雑な・多くの異なる部分からなる）に、com-（共に）+ -plex（複雑さや規模を示す要素）という構造が見える。背後には *kom-（共に・完全に）+ *pleḱ-（折る・編む）、さらに *pel-（覆う・折る）のイメージがある。
いくつもの部分を折り合わせ、重ね合わせたものは、単純でなく「複雑な」ものになる。そこから形容詞の complex（複雑な）と、複数の要素から成る「複合体」という名詞の意味が発達した。
complex・complexity・complexion は、いずれも「部分が組み合わさった状態」を思い浮かべると覚えやすい。com- は「共に」、plex は「折り重ねる」と読めば、complex の「複雑さ」が見えてくる。
