覚え方
古英語 heard(硬い・厳しい)は、印欧祖語 *(s)ker-(切り離す)にさかのぼるとされる語。
この物理的な「硬い」という意味に加え、「乗り越えるのが硬い→難しい」という比喩から「困難な」、力を込めて事に当たる様子から「一生懸命に」という意味も生まれた。
*(s)ker- の仲間には short(切り詰められた→短い)・share(切り分けたもの→分け前)がある。hard は「硬い→難しい→一生懸命」と意味が広がったと覚えるとよい。
