tough は、中英語の形容詞 tough（丈夫な・かみ切りにくい・耐えがたい）から続く語。「力を加えても簡単には屈しない」という感覚を手がかりにすると、複数の意味をまとめられる。tough material は「丈夫な素材」で、引いたり使い続けたりしても傷みにくいことを表す。
