consciousnessの語源と覚え方
覚え方
conscious（意識のある・自覚した）+ -ness（〜である状態・性質） で「意識」。目が覚めて分かっている状態、自分が今どうであるかを自覚している状態を指す。
conscious の背後には kom-（共に）+ skey-（裂く・分ける） がある。「切り分けて見分ける」＝知る**という発想で、外の世界と自分を区別して分かっている状態が「意識」になった。
*skey- の仲間は science（切り分けて分かること→科学）・conscience（良心）。lose consciousness（意識を失う）・social consciousness（社会意識）のように、医学的な「意識」と、問題への「自覚」の両方に使う。
