lengthの語源と覚え方
覚え方
long（長い）+ -th（性質を表す名詞を作る）。中英語 lengthe、さらに古英語 lengþu にさかのぼり、long → leng と母音がわずかに変わるのが古い名詞の作り方の名残である。
-þ（-the）は形容詞から抽象名詞を作る要素で、strong→strength、wide→width、deep→depth、warm→warmth も同じ仕組み。「形容詞の母音を少し変えて -th を付けると名詞になる」と押さえると一気に増える。
意味は空間の「長さ」から時間の「期間」まで広がる。at length（長々と／ついに）、go to great lengths（骨を折る）のような熟語でも、根にあるのは「どこまで伸びるか」という感覚。
