ゲルマン語系の long とその名詞形 length が中心で、along（〜に沿って）、alongside、oblong（細長い）、furlong（畝の長さ→ハロン）のように空間の長さを表し、longing（長く思う→あこがれ）、longevity（長寿）のように時間へも伸びる。ラテン語 longus 経由の prolong・elongation・longitude・longitudinal は、改まった文脈や学術の語として使われる。
注意したいのは long → length の母音交替で、動詞化すると lengthen、副詞的には lengthwise・lengthways となる。wavelength のように複合語の後半に来ることも多い。なお forest・forester・deforestation や furrow・fir のような別の綴りの塊も同じハブに束ねられているが、長さを表す語群とは切り離して覚えたほうが混乱がない。
