覚え方
along は古英語 andlang（長さに沿って伸びる・期間や領域全体を覆う）に由来する。andlang は and-（〜に対して・向き合って）+ lang（長い） と分けられ、長く伸びたものに沿って進むイメージから「〜に沿って」「並行して」になった。
道に沿って歩く、海岸線に沿って広がる、時間の経過に沿って起こる、といった場面で使う。and- の背景にある *anda-（〜に対して・逆の）を細かく意識するより、lang＝長く伸びた線 と捉えると、along の「沿って」という意味を思い出しやすい。
