truthの語源と覚え方
覚え方
tru は古英語で「忠実な・誠実な」、つまり寄りかかっても揺るがないこと。そこへ性質を名詞にする th が付き、truth は「偽りがなく信頼できる内容」、すなわち「真実」を表す。
tell the truth は「本当のことを言う」、discover the truth は「真相を知る」。true が a true story のように物事を説明するのに対し、truth は知ったり話したりする対象になる。人の正直さを言う用法もあり、どちらも「偽りがない」という一点でつながっている。
