flu はラテン語 fluō「流れる」。con（共に）と合わさった cōnfluēns は「合わさって流れる」で、その名詞 cōnfluentia が水の合流を指した。
地理では川の合流点（the confluence of two rivers）、比喩では複数の要素が重なり合うことを表し、a confluence of events（さまざまな出来事の重なり）のように使う。
fluid（流れるもの→液体）・fluent（よどみなく流れる→流暢な）・influence（中へ流れ込む→影響）と同族。flu を見たら「流れる」が読み方のコツ。
