覚え方
ラテン語 appendix（付着して吊るされるもの、補足部分・成長物）は、appendō（上から吊るす・重りを掛けて量る）+ -ix というイメージで理解できる。何かに付け足され、そこからぶら下がる部分が原義で、書物の末尾に「付け足す部分」である「付録」や、人体に付着した「虫垂」を指すようになった。
appendō の背後にある *(s)pend-（引き伸ばす）も、何かを本体から伸ばして付ける感覚を支える。append（付け加える）、appendage（付属物）も同族なので、appendix は本体に付け足され、そこから伸び出したものと覚えるとよい。
