add はラテン語 addō（加える・置く・持ってくる）から来た語。ad-（〜へ）+ -dō（置く） で、「何かをそこへ置く・持ってくる」という原義から、物を組み合わせて全体の量を増やす「追加する」になった。
-dō のもとにある *dʰeh₁-（置く・なす） というイメージを押さえると、add は「足す」だけでなく「対象へ置き加える」と理解できる。addition は add の名詞形で、add を見たら『そこへ置いて増やす』と覚えるとよい。
