collateralの語源と覚え方
覚え方
collateral はラテン語 collaterālis（側面の・並列の・傍系の）に由来し、col-（付き添う・強化を示す要素）を含む。中心となるものの横に寄り添い、平行して走るものが原義である。
主要な構造や主題の横にあるものは、中心そのものではないが、関連して支える位置にある。そこから collateral は「付随的な・副次的な」という意味になり、金融では借り手に添えて差し出す「担保」を指すようになった。
collateral を見たら『中心の横に並び、支えるもの』と覚えるとよい。collateral damage（付随的な損害）は本来の目標の横で生じる損害、collateral security（担保）は借入れに添えて支える保証である。
