ラテン語 sequor（ついて行く）の分詞形 sequēns（後に続く）につながる語で、「順次の・続いて起こる」を表す。一つが終わると、その後へ次が続く並びが手掛かりになる。sequent events なら、相次いで起こる出来事。形容詞としては古風・専門的な響きがあり、日常の文章ではあまり見かけない。
古い文章の sequent to an event は、ある出来事の後に、またはその結果として続くという意味で読める。sequence は続きのある並び、sequential は順序どおりに進む性質、subsequent はその後のことを表す関連語。sequent を見たら 何の後に続いているのかを押さえると、時間の順番なのか、原因を受けた結果なのかを文脈に合わせられる。
