覚え方

古英語 rēocan（煙を出す）から。もとは煙が立ちのぼることを指し、そこから強いにおいが立ちこめる意味になった。

現代英語では悪臭に使うのが普通で、reek of smoke（煙草くさい）のように言う。比喩では reek of corruption（腐敗の臭いがぷんぷんする）と、うさんくささを表す。エディンバラの古い愛称 Auld Reekie は、石炭の煙に覆われた街並みから付いた呼び名で、元の「煙」の意味を今に伝えている。
