覚え方
ラテン語 cancellārius（門番・書記官）から。もとは cancellus（格子の桟）+ -ārius（〜を扱う人） で、法廷や教会の「格子のところに立つ係」を指した。
取り次ぎ役から、記録と文書を握る書記官へ、さらに国政の要職へと上がっていった語。ドイツ・オーストリアの「首相」、英国の Chancellor of the Exchequer（財務大臣）、大学の「総長」など、国と場面で指すものが変わる。
英語の chancel（教会の内陣＝格子で仕切られた区画）と同じ仲間。格子状に線を引いて文書を無効にすることから来た cancel（取り消す）とも通じ、cancel- は「格子」と読める。
