primary はラテン語 prīmārius（第一級の・主要な・基本的な）から来た語。prīmārius は prīmus（最初の・主要な）+ -ārius（名詞や数詞から形容詞を作る）と分けられ、prīmus の背景には *per-（前に・通り抜ける）がある。「前に出た最初のもの」が、最も重要なものという意味につながった。
そのため primary は「主要な・初歩の・第一の」を表し、primary school（初等学校）や primary cause（第一の原因）に使われる。primary election（予備選挙）は本選挙に先立つ段階なので、primary を見たら『最初に前へ出るもの、そこから最重要のもの』と覚えると、意味の広がりを一度に理解できる。
