primitiveの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 prīmitīvus（最初の・原初の）= prīmitus（最初に・元来）+ -īvus（形容詞を作る）。「いちばん初めにあるもの、もともとのもの」が原義で、そこから発達段階の初めにある「原始的な」、名詞で「原始人」になった。
背後にあるのは *preh₂-（前に）で、時間の並びの「前」＝最初を指す。prime（第一の）・primary（主要な・初期の）・primeval（原始の）と並べると、prim- は「いちばん前・最初」と読める。
「劣った」という含みだけの語ではない点にも注意したい。絵画の primitive（素朴派）やプログラミングの primitive type（基本型）のように、「それ以上分解できない、最も基本の」という中立的な使い方も多い。
