詳細な語源ツリー

フランス語 naïve（世間知らずな）をそのまま借りた語。遡ると *ǵenh₁-（産む・生み出す）にたどりつき、「生まれたままの・手を加えていない」が出発点である。

そこから良い方には「素朴な・飾らない」、悪い方には「世間を知らない→だまされやすい」へ分かれた。a naive question（無邪気な質問）は前者寄り、Don't be so naive.（甘く考えるな）は後者。

同じ *ǵenh₁- からは native（生まれつきの）・nature（生まれ持った性質）・nation（生まれを同じくする集団）・generate（生み出す）が出る。綴りの ï は借用元のまま残った形で、派生は naively・naivety。

英語では gener（generate・generation）、gen（genuine・oxygen）、nat（nature・native）、kin / king（kind・kingdom）、engin（engine・engineer）の形で現れ、「生む・生まれる」の意味を核にもつ。
