覚え方
elect(投票で選ぶ)+ -ion(行為・結果・状態を表す)。古い形 eleccioun(選挙) を経て英語に定着した語で、中心にあるのは *leǵ-(集める)、つまり集めた中から取り出すという動きである。
単なる好みの選択ではなく、制度に沿って代表を選び出す手続きを指すのがこの語で、general election(総選挙)・presidential election(大統領選挙)・by-election(補欠選挙)のように使う。run in an election(選挙に出る)・win an election(選挙に勝つ)も定番の組み合わせ。
*leǵ-(集める) は collect(共に集める)・select(分けて選ぶ)・collection にも流れる。lect=集めて選ぶ、e-=そこから外へと分ければ、elect・election・elective が一続きになる。
