vote はラテン語 vōtum(神への誓約・荘厳な約束)に由来する。神に願いを託したり、誓いを表明したりする行為が、やがて公的な意思表示へ広がり、「投票する・投票」という意味になった。
「一票を投じる」は、もともと自分の願いや意思を公に差し出すイメージ。vow(誓う)・vote(投票する)・votive(誓願の)は、vōtum を「誓い・願い」から「意思表示」へ広げて覚えるとつながりやすい。
