firsthandの語源と覚え方

first(いちばん早い・最上位の)+ hand(手) で「最初の手による」=直接の。情報や経験が誰かを経由せず、自分の手に最初に届いた状態を指す。
だから firsthand experience(直接の体験)、firsthand account(当事者の証言)のように使い、副詞でも learn it firsthand(自分で直接知る)と言える。対になるのが secondhand で、こちらは「又聞きの」「中古の」。手を何回経たかで一次情報と二次情報を区別する発想である。
first の背後には *preh₂-(前に) があり、prime(第一の)・prior(先の)・premier(首位の)と同じ「前」の系列。first=いちばん前と押さえておけばよい。
