古英語 mete は、いまの「肉」ではなく飲み物以外の食べ物全般を指す語だった。背後にあるのは *meh₂d-（濡れる・湿る） で、「汁気のある・脂ののったもの」という感覚がある。

後に「食用の動物の肉」へ意味が絞られたが、古い広い意味は sweetmeat（砂糖菓子）、meat and drink（飲み食い＝何よりの楽しみ）、nut meat（木の実の可食部）、the meat of a crab（カニの身）といった言い方に残っている。

そこから比喩で「中身・要点」にもなる。the meat of the argument（議論の核心）、a meaty discussion（中身の濃い議論）。meat は「実（み）のある中身」と押さえると、肉と要点が一本につながる。

「湿る・肥える」意の語根に遡るとされ、英語では meat（meat・meatball）、mate（mate・roommate）、mast（mastoid・mastectomy）の形で現れる。
