詳細な語源ツリー

narrative は、出来事を順に記述したもの、または物語を作り上げることに関する語。出来事を語る流れを思い浮かべると、「物語」「物語的な」という意味を覚えやすい。

narrative は、事実を伝える narrative（叙述）にも、創作された narrative（物語）にも使える。narrate（物語る）・narrator（語り手）・ narration（叙述）も同族なので、narr- を見たら「語って展開する」と読むのがコツ。

英語では cogn（recognize・cognitive）、not（note・notice）、gnos（diagnose・agnostic）、本来語の know・can（know・cunning）などの形で現れ、「知る」の意味を帯びる。
