referenceの語源と覚え方
覚え方
英語 reference は、ラテン語 referō（持ち帰る・報告する）に由来する。re-（後ろへ・再び）+ ferō（運ぶ・耐える）で、「情報や話を元の出所へ運び返す」というイメージが原義だ。そこから、出典へ戻って確認する「参照」、さらに人や資料を差し向ける「紹介」へ意味が発展した。
ferō の *bʰer-（運ぶ） は transfer（越えて運ぶ→移す）、prefer（前に運ぶ→好む）、conference（一緒に運び寄せる→会議）にも共通する。fer を見たら「運ぶ」、re- が付けば「元へ運ぶ」と考えると、reference の意味をつかみやすい。なお -ence は状態や条件を表す名詞語尾で、refer の行為・結果を名詞にしている。
