覚え方
ラテン語 notātiō = notō（印をつける・書き留める）+ -tiō（動作や結果を表す語尾）。notō はさらに nota（印・記号）+ -ō。
「印をつけること」が原義で、英語では記号を使って物事を書き表す仕組みそのものを指す。musical notation は楽譜の記法、scientific notation は指数を使った数の表記。
同じ nota からは note（書き留めたもの）・notable・notary（公証人）・annotate（注を書き込む）が出ている。
