覚え方
ラテン語 commentārius（覚書・手記）= commentor（熟考する・論じる）+ -ārius（それを扱うものをつくる）。もとは、じっくり考えたことを書きとめたノートを指した。
そこから「本文に付けた注解・解説書」になり、さらに放送の実況・論評へ広がった。running commentary（逐一の実況）、political commentary（政治評論）のように、対象に沿って随時ことばを添えるのが commentary である。
commentor の背景は *men-（思う・考える）、頭には *kom-（共に・完全に）。mental（心の）・mention（言及する）・comment（論評）と同族で、「考え抜いて言い添えたもの」 と読める。
