覚え方
古英語 landmearc（境界標）= land（土地・国）+ mearc（印・境界）。土地の境目に立てた目印の杭や石が原義で、land の背後には *lendʰ-（土地・原野） がある。
境界の目印は遠くからでもそれと分かる存在なので、「その土地の目印になるもの＝ランドマーク」へ広がった。塔・山・大きな建物など、道案内の基準になるものを指す。
さらに比喩に進み、歴史の区切りとなる「画期的な出来事」にもなった。a landmark decision（画期的な判決）・a landmark case（記念碑的な判例）。mark は「印・境界」で、march（国境地帯）や Denmark の -mark も同じ「境」の系統。
