benchmarkの語源と覚え方
覚え方
bench(台・腰掛け)+ mark(印)。もとは測量の用語で、地面や石壁に刻んだ印(mark)に水準測量の標尺を載せる台(bench)を掛けたもの。「測量の基準点」が原義。
そこから「比べるための基準」へ広がり、今ではコンピュータの性能測定(benchmark test)、企業や政策の比較指標(benchmarking)に使う。「基準として刻んだ印」という原イメージを持っておくと、動詞 benchmark A against B(A を B と比べて評価する)も読みやすい。
bench の奥には *bʰeg-(曲がる・反る)があり、盛り土や細長い台を表す bank(土手・銀行のカウンター)と同じ系統。
