touchstone は touch（触れる）＋ stone（石）。もとは金などの純度を確かめる「試金石」を指す。金属を黒い石にこすり付けて跡を残し、その跡を比べて質を調べたことが背景にある。何かを当てて、その価値を試す石という具体的な道具から、比喩の意味へつながる。
