覚え方
memory（記憶）+ -ial（〜に関する）。ラテン語 memoriālis（memoria（記憶）+ -ālis）と同じ組み立てで、「記憶にかかわる＝記念の」が原義である。
形容詞では「記念の・追悼の」、名詞では記憶をとどめるための「記念碑・記念物」。a war memorial（戦争記念碑）、a memorial service（追悼式）、in memory of ... と近い意味で as a memorial to ... とも言う。
アメリカの Memorial Day（5月最終月曜日）は戦没者追悼記念日。もとは南北戦争の戦死者を弔う日だったが、いまはすべての戦没者を悼む日となり、連休として過ごされることも多い。
