覚え方
古英語 stemn（幹・茎） が stem。まっすぐ立つ植物の幹が出発点で、*steh₂-（立つ）に連なる。
英語ではそこから家系の「本家・血筋の分かれ」を指すようになり、さらに動詞 stem from ～（～に由来する）が生まれた。幹があって枝が出るという関係を、原因と結果に重ねた言い方。
同じ *steh₂- の系統に stand・stable・statue がある。文法の stem（語幹）も、語形変化を支える幹という同じ見立て。
