英語 anchor（錨）は古英語 ancor をそのまま受け継いだ語で、古英語の時点ですでに「船をとめる重り」を指していた。
この「船を固定する重り」という意味は現代までほぼ変わらず、船の錨だけでなく、比喩的に物事を安定させる「支え・よりどころ」の意味でも使われるようになった。
名詞の anchor（錨）と動詞の anchor（固定する）はもともと同じ語から発達したペアで、「錨を下ろす→固定する」という流れで覚えると結び付けやすい。
