覚え方
古オック語 flaut（笛）にさかのぼる語で、英語では細長い管を指すようになった。
flue が表すのは、暖炉や煙突の中を通る煙道、ボイラーの通気管。flue gas は「排ガス」、パイプオルガンの flue pipe は笛と同じ仕組みで音を出す管で、こちらは語の出どころと意味がよく重なる。
同じ flaut からは flute（フルート）も出ている。細長いシャンパングラスを flute と呼ぶのも、この形から来た名前。
